Given near total creative freedom, our only initial direction on this project was to take insperation from 8-bit racing games such as Mario Kart to take some of the edge off of the darker and more serious subject matter.
Initial character design exploration - drawing inspiration for Koe’s design from the iconic classic Super Mario Kart aesthetic, specifically aping the proportions of the games more burly characters such as Donkey Kong.
Making the most out of every pixel
The limited budget and tight timeline on this video required some outside the box thinking to do the song justice. To keep the visuals interesting and dynamic over the course of the song, we created a rotating cylinder on which we could generate a never ending desert road. Having the sun set over the course of the entire video’s runtime allowed for us to play with everchanging lighting conditions, making it possible to squeeze every bit of beauty of the environment created for the video.
